Why Charge at Home?

Home charging is the most convenient and cost-effective way to keep your EV topped up. Charge overnight while you sleep and wake up to a full battery every morning.

Save Money

Home electricity costs around 7-10p/kWh on overnight tariffs vs 50-80p/kWh at public fast chargers.

Convenience

Plug in when you get home, unplug in the morning. No queuing at public chargers.

Solar Integration

Charge with free solar electricity. Smart chargers automatically use excess solar generation.

Cost Comparison

Charging a typical EV (60kWh battery) from 20% to 80%:

  • Home (overnight tariff): ~£3.60
  • Home (standard rate): ~£8.40
  • Home (solar): Free
  • Public rapid charger: £18-30

Based on 36kWh charge (60% of 60kWh battery).

Solar + EV: The Perfect Combination

If you have solar panels (or are planning to), a smart EV charger can automatically charge your car using excess solar generation - essentially giving you free fuel.

How Solar EV Charging Works

  • Excess solar detection: The charger monitors your solar generation and home usage
  • Automatic charging: When excess solar is available, the charger starts automatically
  • Variable speed: Charging speed adjusts based on available solar power
  • Boost option: Top up from the grid when you need a faster charge

A typical solar + EV setup can save £1,000-2,000+ per year compared to petrol and public charging.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast will my car charge at home?

A 7kW home charger adds about 25-30 miles of range per hour. A typical EV can be fully charged overnight (6-8 hours). Most people only need to top up rather than fully charge, so even a couple of hours provides plenty of range.

What electricity tariff should I use?

EV-specific tariffs like Octopus Go offer cheap overnight electricity (7p/kWh). Smart chargers can be scheduled to charge only during cheap rate periods, significantly reducing costs.

Can I charge from a normal plug socket?

EVs come with a 3-pin plug charger for emergencies, but this is slow (~8 miles/hour) and not recommended for regular use. A dedicated charger is faster, safer, and more convenient.

Do I need planning permission?

Most home EV charger installations don't require planning permission. They're covered under permitted development rights. We'll advise if your situation is different (e.g., listed buildings).

What cable length do I need?

Most chargers come with a 5-7m tethered cable, which is sufficient for most driveways. Untethered chargers (you use your own cable) are also available if you need more flexibility.
